This is five-time LeMans winner Derek Bell behind the wheel of a 1966 model GT40 Mk.I built by Pathfinder Motorsports doing a demonstration run at Sebring International Raceway's 24-hour course. Derek, also a former Formula 1 driver, is driving with a passenger who won a charity demo drive. Filmed during the HSR Sebring Fall Classic Races on December 6, 2009, this GT40 won the US Vintage Grand Prix in its class and later won the New York Governor's Cup Race. It is a continuation model built by Superformance and is chassis number GT40P/2090. It is registered in the Safir GT40 and Shelby Registries. This is a 1966 GT40 Mk.I doing some relatively low-speed test laps at Sebring International Raceway's 12-hour long course. Filmed during a NASA HPDE program, the car was in a mixed driver/vehicle group. Passing was strictly limited to specific track locations and required a 'point by' from the driver being passed. This car is Superformance chassis number GT40P/2192 and is registered in the Safir GT40 and Shelby Registries. This particular car was featured in the March 2009 edition of Car & Driver magazine. Built by Olthoff Racing in Mt. Ulla, NC, this Superformance GT40 MK II is as close to an original GT40 as you can get. In fact this car is so authentic that it is officially recognized by the SAAC GT40 world registry and, according to Superformance, can interchange 90 percent of its parts with an original car. I don't think the extreme, purpose-built nature of the GT40 really occurs to most people until they see one up close and personal. At just 40 inches tall, the driver is more or less lying in the car rather than sitting; and that low slung profile, when combined with the car's buckled down front end and sawed off tail, create one wicked looking creation. The Ford GT40 was a sports car and winner of the 24 hours of Le Mans four times in a row, from 1966 to 1969. It was built to win long-distance sports car races against Ferrari (who won at Le Mans six times in a row from 1960 to 1965). The car was named the GT (for Grand Tourisme) with the 40 representing its overall height of 40 inches (1.02 m, measured at the windshield) as required by the rules.
