Feb 5, 2012 - I also play single strung lute. After Falckenhagen, I think it is possible that lute and theorbo were single-strung for clarity, affekt, and ease of retuning for key changes. There were, what, 10 or 15 professional lute players in the world then. They, mostly, made their money accompanying opera singers. You can play louder, with more control, on a single string. I use rest-stroke on long appogiaturas sometimes. I just bet they did too. This isn't french lute anymore...
