She sung in 2 registers and her voice was not that beautiful. And wtf.. no great sopranos? There are a lot of gifted singers, but they are never known, because of the marketing that some really really small and shrill voices singers like Dessay get for free. Listen to Maria Slatinaru she is greater then all current met singers combined.but unknown

Tebaldi like Nillson had big voices except Nillson's voice was colorless and she was that great in italian opera except Turandot. I heard Dessay in New York like i found her voice very small. For Aida, Forza, Wally, Macbeth, Il Trovatore and Norman etc etc you need big voices. Freni and Scotto had small voices and sang operas that did not suit them.

Mar 14, 2012 - Yes, Tebaldi had a big voice, but had the tessitura of a lyric/spinto soprano. The moment she sung more dramatic roles, she destroyed her voice pushing for a more dramatic sound. Nillson was indeed a dramatic voice with a lower tessitura and has not developed those problems. It`s harder for dramatic soprano to have the 'ring' in their voice. that doesn`t mean they have fewer harmonics then a lyric voice. They have lower overtones.. so of course they have different colors.

Mar 14, 2012 - I agree with you about Tebaldi, but she sang with great great success La Gioconda and La Fanciulla de West with great success at the end of her great career - I saw her in La Gioconda in New York (i was 18 years old) she was great, huge voice and her acting improved a lot. She made the best recording of La Gioconda. She made a lot of recordings (27 operas) She always had that firm clear sound, it was never mushy like Sutherland. To see her on stage was a great experience.

She's gorgeous in Mozart (Nozze di Figaro), Verdi (Don Carlo & La Forza), Puccini (Tosca); however, her rendition of Ebben did not impress me: my two favourites for Ebben remain Angela Gheorghiu and Arta Florescu.

Mar 15, 2012 - Well... they all had great voices, great technique. Nowadays voices like this are not really promoted anymore. I heard they also install microphones in opera halls:)) I saw Dessay in Lucia last year... I don`t know how she could have pulled it off without amplification. her voice is so small. In the past, with a voice that small you would have sung baroque or chamber music. You could have never made an opera career, or would have sung only light coloratura roles.
