Jan 24, 2012 - when you work in a business that requires you to talk to the costumers, one of the things that the employer looks for how well you can communicate with others. If your accents or dialects is so strong, and you can't adjust it to make it more clear for everyone else, then why would the employer want you in that position of work. It not Discrimination when it is clear that you will not be able to effectively communicate with the costumers, but it is still a thin line.

Jan 24, 2012 - if they speak like dadlandshow then i say hire them he is understandable but has the hawaiian accent and i have to say it depends on the sitchuation and by not hiring the person originally keeps you from having the lawsuit and i think some people would understand and they could switch what they are doing at the job or something if they did hire that person and gave them a chance but most likely they wouldnt be hired at all making it really hard to prove

Jan 24, 2012 - @ohbuddyiliketowatch Yeah, but thats not a dialect issue. Thats not being competent enough for the job requirement. Its not racist to not hire people that are not competent enough. That said, I wouldnt buy any services from a company that seemingly did social dumping. Outsourcing customer service to a country where semi qualified people are payed nothing just so the company can check a tick box.

Jan 24, 2012 - Accent discrimination is more of a problem than racial discrimination here in the UK, if I go down south with my scouse accent I am followed in shops, asked to pay for my food before I eat it. Its more of a class issue here.

Jan 24, 2012 - Hmmm... What if it's an affected accent or style of speaking like a woman using a "helpless girl" voice or a falsetto lisp sometimes adopted by gay men?

Jan 25, 2012 - I graduated from 4 diffrent schools in America, and can't find a job to pay for my bills. Problem is my background and foreign accent. I have been in the US for 21 years and I realized I am wasting my time. I guess I got to go back and use my skills & education in my old country.

Jan 25, 2012 - Well, I wouldn't want to have to listen to someone with a southern accent speaking all the time! Other than that I have no problem with accents or dialects.
Moionfire mowi:
Jan 25, 2012 - Very few american accents are hard to understand. Most opposition to regional accents are just a function of bigotry and perceptions of intelligence or lack their of. And I am glad David mentioned the race based accents. Many accents reveal class and race.

Jan 26, 2012 - This reminds me of my time as a teacher. Our school employed a speech tutor who, in my opinion, was not only functionally retarded, but also had a profound speech impediment. The woman had difficulty joining in conversations in the teachers' lounge. She was very shy and spoke with a lisp as well as a stutter. Why would someone like that be employed as (of all things) a speech tutor? For this particular job, her "disability" clearly affected her performance, rendering the woman unqualified.

Jan 26, 2012 - Your "little problem" IS a problem. How can you state your dislike for Southern accents and then finish your comment with "...other than that I have no problem with accents or dialects". Your example IS the very definition discrimination. Why should someone who is capable be deprived of employment due to bigoted employers or coworkers? What if that candidate is BETTER at performing the job than YOU are? Would s/he be disqualified due to southern accent? Who should be hired?
MultiSamTaylor mowi:
Jan 26, 2012 - If one is dealing with the public in an area where the redneck accent is not common then it does hinder their ability to do their job! That's just a fact! It's not difficult to learn to speak properly (I was born and raised in the south and I have no trace of a southern accent!)! For a person raised in the US not to speak proper english shows either laziness or ignorance (two traits I do not want working for me!)!
multitalentino mowi:
Jan 26, 2012 - You admitted that YOU had a problem with such an accent. That means YOU have the problem. To suggest that "everybody here would be unhappy with a redneck accent of a coworker" suggests projection on your part. There are many things y7ou "may not like" about a person, but to discriminate on these personal (non work-related) "shortcomings" of a peer (who is equally or even better qualified than you) is WRONG. Sombody help me out here. Is MultiSam DISCRIMINATING?
BradyH84 mowi:
Jan 29, 2012 - @Multisam just proved that it "affecting your business" is just an excuse to hide the fact that people refuse to hire someone they personally stereotype as lazy and ignorant.
BradyH84 mowi:
Jan 29, 2012 - Oh and speaking "properly" is bullshit. More people speak a regional dialect than speak "standard english" so fuck off with your properness. Oh wait I'm ignorant and lazy because I made up a word. PROPERNESS. Nobody take me too seriously ok?
multitalentino mowi:
Jan 31, 2012 - There is no "truth" about bigotry. It is what it is. People hating people for trivial reasons, but hating them nonetheless. Blame God, blame your "beliefs", you're still a bigot. You need to own your bigotry, otherwise you cannot ask to be respected for it. The same "beliefs" were blamed when segregation was championed "on religious grounds". As was opposition to interracial marriage and an end to slavery. Hatred and discrespect can not be reconciled with any truths. Bigotry is inddefensible.
